Brittany Collection

Breton winter THIS COLLECTION INVITES US INTO THE FASCINATING STORY OF GENERATIONS OF BRETON FARMERS WHO CROSSED THE CHANNEL TO ENGLAND TO SELL THEIR UNIQUE PINK ONIONS. VERY SOON, THESE FRENCH ADVENTURERS BECAME KNOWN AS THE “ONION JOHNNIES”, THE MEN WHO CARRIED TONNES OF ONIONS ON THEIR HANDLEBARS WHILE CYCLING EVERY SINGLE CORNER OF ENGLAND.

This is the story of men who left their Breton homeland to go and seek fortune and adventure on the other side of the Channel.

Little did they know that, with their trade spanning over one hundred and fifty years, they would become the mythical figures of the French onion men, riding their special bicycles in their stripy shirts.

We spent time talking and interviewing retired “Johnnies” and their families in Roscoff, Santec and in St-Pol De Léon - a tiny spot on the North Breton coast of France. This collection tells the story of these men and women... romantic reminiscences and anecdotes of the daily adventures that coloured their extraordinary lives. These pieces pay tribute to the passion and legacy of their trade.

Vive les Johnnies!
